Moving On: 8,207,654 mm

A group of jewellery students from the Royal College of Art are staging a walking exhibition covering 8,207,654 millimetres (5.1miles) across London on Friday 25 January.
The students will be showing their contemporary designs in accessible containers on their bodies to encourage live interaction with passers-by in the street on tubes and buses! For the 8,207,654 millimetres walk (mm being the unit of measurement the designers work in) they hope to open up the debate around accessibility of jewellery and so-called precious objects. The collective will encourage the public to touch their work to counteract the traditional notion that jewellery is kept isolated in glass cabinets. Designs will include games of oscillating objects, light constellation objects and rings of strings.

The group begin their journey at the Royal College of Art in Kensington stopping outside city landmarks along the way, including the British Museum and Tate Modern. They will invite passers-by to Gallery SO on Brick Lane to try on pieces from their current jewellery exhibition Chamber of Wonder. The walk will finish at the Design Museum where the students will talk about their experience at the Pecha Kucha x Craft-crossover event, as part of the Museum’s Unexpected Pleasures jewellery exhibition. Throughout the walk, the collective will be giving away 5 complimentary tickets (worth £17 each) for the evening event to members of the public.

The RCA students are part of a newly formed collective called Moving On whose aim is to increase the public’s awareness and accessibility of contemporary jewellery and object culture, Moving On:8,207,654mm is the first in an on-going series of public events.
