Effe Kijken 5 / Let's Have a Look 5 at Gallery Marzee

The fifth and final 'Effe Kijken / Let's Have a Look' has kicked off. The BIGGER picture project asked the students of the Royal College of art to open up questions about inner experience and exterior appearance. Every student gave their own interpretation of the topic and the results can bee seen at Gallery Marzee in the Netherlands.

For myself, a conceptual jewellery designer, I mostly use a label to frame my work. It is an important part of the work, it not only identifies the maker and the context it also explains the concept and idea. Therefore my work 'Homage to the Label'.

These goldplated magnets have been developed to make nearly
every label wearable. If you buy a piece of jewellery from a
gallery you can, with these magnets, wear the label as well.

what's in a LABEL?

Label:

noun
small piece of paper, fabric, plastic, or similar material attached to an object and giving information about it
verb
labels, labelling, labelled; US labels, labeling, labeled [with object]

-Oxford dictionaries

-----------------------------------------

A label frames a piece.

It provides essential information about the maker and the context in which the piece was made, and it is usually the only visual representation of the title.

For a conceptual jeweller, like myself, the label is an important part of a piece because it can contain an explanation of the idea. For those pieces the label is just like the actual work, a different visual, mostly written representation of the idea and yet it does not receive as much attention. Eventhough the label of a piece contains much needed information, there is also no existance for the label when the piece leaves the gallery and/or when the piece is worn.

Why?

Should a label for jewellery take on a different shape?
Should it be attached to the piece?
Should it be incorporated in the piece of jewellery?
Or should jewellery not be labelled at all?

RCA Christmas Fête

This Christmas if you’re bored of giving your Granny a set of hankies or your Dad another road atlas and you need a bit of inspiration, then the RCA is the perfect place to shop as it opens its first Christmas Fête to the public from 6 to 9 December.

RCA students and graduates will be selling a range of affordable, beautiful and unique art and design pieces that are sure to make your friends and family smile. Items start from as little as £2. This is a fantastic opportunity to pick up original Christmas gifts as well as helping to support up and coming creative student talent.

The Fête will be located in a marquee on Jay Mews (just opposite Kensington Gardens) and will also feature a pop up café serving festive sweet treats courtesy of Kath’s Cakes, hot chocolate and mulled soft drinks. The Fête has been organised by the RCA Students’ Union to help promote the work of students to a wider audience.

Visitors to the Christmas Fête will also be able to view the College’s 175th anniversary exhibition, The Perfect Place to Grow, located in the Kensington galleries. With free late night entry on Friday 7 December until 8pm, this will be a chance to visit both events on the same night.
