-Oxford dictionaries
-----------------------------------------
A label frames a piece.
It provides essential
information about the maker and the context in which the piece was made, and it is
usually the only visual representation of the title.
For a conceptual
jeweller, like myself, the label is an important part of a piece because it can
contain an explanation of the idea. For those pieces the label is just like the
actual work, a different visual, mostly written representation of the idea and
yet it does not receive as much attention. Eventhough the label of a piece contains much needed information, there is also no existance for the label when the piece leaves the gallery and/or when the piece is worn.
Why?
Should a label for jewellery take on a different shape?
Should it be attached to the piece?
Should it be incorporated in the piece of jewellery?
Or should jewellery not be labelled at all?
